Your University NetID
All students, faculty, and staff at the University of Tennessee have been assigned a NetID and associated password. Your NetID permits secure access to a variety of university Web-based systems.
Your NetID
If you are new to the University, you may have been given your NetID as part of your orientation information.Your NetID is the ‘name’ part of your University email address; e.g.
‘name@tennessee.edu’. For example, if your email address is
smith123@tennessee.edu, then your NetID would be smith123.
If you don’t know your University NetID, search for yourself in the UT Online Directory. Your email address will be displayed.
Your NetID Password
By default you have a NetID password composed of the following three pieces of information:- The first two letters of your birth month in lower case
- The last two digits of your birth year
- The last four digits of your UT ID Number For example, if you were born February 1979 and your UT ID Number is 123-45-6789 then your default password would be fe796789
- To change your own information in the online UT Directory
- To check your email onUT’s WebMail via the UTK-MAIL (IMS) server
- To access UT’s wireless network on campus
- To gain Enhanced Remote Access (ERA) from off-campus locations via a dial-up or ISDN connection
The default password allows you to gain initial access to password-protected resources. Since it is composed of personal information that could be guessed, it is relatively insecure and should not be used as your permanent password. You should change this password to something more private as soon as possible. You can change your NetID password online anytime by visiting the site for OIT Password management at Password Reset. Please note that changing your NetID password will also change your PH/ERA password.
Forgotten Password
If you can’t remember your NetID password, you can have it reset to your initial default password. Students with a PIN can reset a forgotten password online at Password Reset by entering their UT ID Number and Student PIN Code to verify their identity. Otherwise drop by the OIT Service Center in 104 Aconda Court and ask for a NetID password reset. Bring your UT ID Card to verify your identity.back to top
