Grade Center: Action Bar and Spreadsheet
The Grading Center interface has an Action Bar area showing links to tools and a spreadsheet area that displays grades and other information.In this tutorial, you will learn about the following Action Bar tools and spreadsheet elements:
Add Grade Column
Add a column to the Grade Center spreadsheet for a graded item.back to top
Add Calculated Column
- Use the drop-down menu to add a column for a customized calculation of grades, including Weighted Grade, Total, Average, and Minimum/Maximum.
- A Calculated Column gathers data from multiple Grade Center columns and performs a calculation for a set of grades. In turn, data from multiple Calculated Columns can be gathered to create a composite Calculated Column.
- New courses contain two Calculated columns by default: a Running Total column and a Running Weighted column. You can modify the default settings of these columns by selecting the Modify Column option in the column heading.
Manage
Use the drop-down menu to:
- Upload and download grades
- Add and modify new categories
- Create Smart Views – filter the Grade Center data
- Create Grading Periods – divide the semester into periods
- Create Grading Schemas – customize grading scales
- Organize Grade Center – hide, reveal, reorder, or regroup columns, freeze columns, assign categories and grading periods to columns
Email
Send an email to all or selected students and anyone else.back to top
Create Reports
Generate and print Reports on all or selected students using Grade Center data.back to top
Grade History
- Display history of all grade changes in the course. The log includes the date of a grade change, the name of the graded assessment, the first and last name of a person who modified the grade, the first and last name of a student, the changes to the grade, when the graded attempt was submitted, and instructor feedback and grading notes.
- One can download the Grade History, clear Grade History, and disable Grade History using the Grade History toolbar buttons.
Current View
Use the drop-down menu to list all the different views of the Grade Center: the default Full Grade Center, Smart Views (customized views created by an instructors) and Grading Periods (customized views based on time segments that are created by an instructor). Each view can be set as default.back to top
Sort columns by
Use the drop-down menu to display possible column sort options: categories, due date, creation date, points possible, and display name. back to top
Interactive View
- The default Interactive View allows inline editing of grades and freezing of columns.
- The Interactive View button in the upper right corner can be toggled to Non-Interactive View. The Non-Interactive view doesn’t allow inline editing and ability to freeze columns, making it easier to navigate by keystroke and to accommodate screen readers. In Non-Interactive View, grades can be entered through drop-down menus in grade cells.
Grade Center Spreadsheet
- A grid of rows and columns containing student and grade information.
- All cells and column headings contain menus for various actions. Click on the double arrow to view the available options.
- Each column, except Last Name, can be hidden using the contextual menu in the column header.
- You can sort rows in ascending or descending order—for example, by students' last name. To do so, click on the column heading once for descending or again for ascending.
- You can select all students in the spreadsheet by clicking on the top cell of the first column and choosing the "Select All" option.
Grade Information Bar
Displays information pertinent to a selected Grade Column cell including Grade Type, Points Possible and Grade Format.back to top
