Grade Center: Create Grading Periods
Grading Periods are time segments created by an instructor. Grading Periods can be used to:- Show columns that belong only to a Grading Period, for example, a first quarter of a semester
- Calculate a grade for a Grading Period
- Analyze the performance of students in a Grading Period
- Create a performance Report for a Grading Period
- Create a Grading Period
- Modify a Grading Period
- Remove a Grading Period
- Display columns associated with a Grading Period
- Set a Grading Period as default view
- Associate columns with a Grading Period
- Calculate a total grade for a Grading Period
Create a Grading Period
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Grading Periods from the drop-down menu.
- Click Add Grading Period.
- Enter a Name for the Grading Period.
- Type a description if necessary.
- Select Range and then Start Date and End Date, including the month, day, and year. Select None if you don’t want to specify date range for the Grading Period.
- If a date range has been specified, checking Associate Existing Items will associate all Grade Columns and Calculated Columns that were previously created with Due Dates to the corresponding Grading Period.
- Click Submit.
A column must be associated with only one Grading Period.
A newly created Grading Period with the same or an overlapping date range will override the settings of an existing Grading Period.

Modify a Grading Period
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Grading Periods from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Modify button to the right of the Grading Period you want to change.
- Enter the changes.
- Click Submit.
Remove a Grading Period
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Grading Periods from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Remove button to the right of the Grading Period. All Grade Center Items associated to this Grading Period will be reset to “Not in a Grading Period.”
- Click OK.
Display columns associated with a Grading Period
- Point to the Current View drop-down menu on the Action Bar (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select the desired Grading Period.
You can set any Grading Period as the default view.

Set a Grading Period as default view
- Point to the Current View drop-down menu on the Action Bar (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select the desired Grading Period.
- Click the “Set as Default” button next to the name of the Grading Period.
The default view can be changed as often as desired.

Associate columns with a Grading Period
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Organize Grade Center from the drop-down menu.
- Select the columns to be included in the Grading Period.
- Click Modify Grading Period.
- Select the Grading Period to which to associate the column.
- Click Submit.
It is not possible to associate a column to more than one Grading Period.
Use the same steps to remove a column from Grading Period or move it to another Grading Period.

Calculate a total grade for a Grading Period
- Associate Grade Columns with a Grading Period (view instructions above).
- Click on the Add Calculated Column button in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Total in the drop-down menu.
- Type the name of the Column, for example, First Quarter Total, and the description of the column.
- Select Score in the drop-down menu next to Primary Display.
- If desired, select Percentage in the Secondary Display drop-down menu.
- Under Dates, select a Grading Period in the drop-down menu.
- In Select Columns, select a radio button next to the option “All Grade Columns in Grading Period” and select the grading period in the drop-down menu.
- Select Yes next to Calculate as running total if you want to include only those items that have grades or attempts.
- Select other Options.
- Click Submit.
It is possible to create a column that calculates a final grade using total grades for each Grading Period.
