Grade Center: Download Grades
You can download Grade Center data to your computer as a tab or comma delimited file that you can use in other applications such as Excel or statistical analysis programs.Download to archive grades
If you manage all your grades in your Online@UT course site, it’s a good practice to download the Grade Center data to your computer after entering each major grade into the Grade Center. You can choose to select specific grades to download or download the complete Grade Center spreadsheet.Download to upload grades later
If you plan to upload grades to the Grade Center from an external application such as Excel spreadsheet, you may wish to download the Grade Center data first as a tab-delimited file. A tab-delimited file can be imported to Excel and then formatted for uploading back to Blackboard.In this tutorial, you will learn how to:
- Download the Grade Center spreadsheet
- Download a selected grade column
- Download a roster of students
- Download a Grading Period
- Download Smart View
- Open the downloaded tab-delimited file in Excel
- Edit and save the downloaded spreadsheet as a regular Excel file
- Download grade history
Download the Grade Center spreadsheet
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Download from the drop-down menu.
- Select the Full Grade Center button next to Select Data to Download.
- Leave Tab as a delimiter type. Tab delimited files have the file extension .xls.
- Choose Yes next to Include Hidden Information if you want hidden columns and students to be included in the spreadsheet.
- Press the Submit button.
- Press the Download button and save the file to your computer.
Blackboard recommends saving a file as tab-delimited.

Download a selected grade column
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Download from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the Selected Columns radio button.
- Select the grade column in the drop-down menu.
- Check the “Include comments for this column” box if desired.
- Leave Tab as a delimiter type. Tab delimited files have the file extension .xls.
- Choose Yes next to Include Hidden Information if you want hidden columns and students to be included in the spreadsheet.
- Press the Submit button.
- Press the Download button and save the file to your computer.
Download a Roster of Students
You can use the downloaded spreadsheet to manage the grades in an Excel spreadsheet on your computer. For example, you can:- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Download from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the “User Information Only” radio button.
- Leave Tab as a delimiter type. Tab delimited files have the file extension .xls.
- Choose Yes next to Include Hidden Information if you want hidden columns and students to be included in the spreadsheet.
- Press Submit.
- Press the Download button and save the file to your computer.
Download a Grading Period
- Click Manage in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Select Download from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the Selected Grading Period radio button.
- Select the Grading Period in the drop-down menu.
- Leave Tab as a delimiter type. Tab delimited files have the file extension .xls.
- Choose Yes next to Include Hidden Information if you want hidden columns and students to be included in the spreadsheet.
- Press the Submit button.
- Press the Download button and save the file to your computer.
You can use this function if you previously set up a Grading Period in the Grade Center.

Download Smart View
If the spreadsheet is displayed in a Smart View, you can download only the information that pertains to the Smart View. Download by Smart View will be the only option in this case. To download the Smart View spreadsheet, follow the instructions for downloading the Grade Center spreadsheet.back to top
Open the downloaded tab-delimited file in Excel
Double-click the downloaded file.OR
- Open the Excel program.
- Select File > Open. Select the saved tab-delimited file. Select Open.
- If Text-Import Wizard opens, leave the default “Delimited” option unchanged and press Next.
- Leave Tab selected as a delimiter and press Next.
- Press Finish.
Edit and Save the Downloaded Spreadsheet as a regular Excel file
- Select File > Save as.
- Type the descriptive name of the file including the course code and date (e.g., ed255_050508) in the File Name box.
- Select “Microsoft Excel 97-2002 & 5.0/95 workbook” in Save As Type (on a PC) and Format (on a Mac) drop-down menu.
- Click Save.
Download Grade History
- Press the Grade History button in the Action Bar of the Grade Center (the gray bar above the spreadsheet).
- Press the Download button in the toolbar above the table with grade records.
- Leave Tab delimited type selected.
- Choose whether you want to include comments in the grade history.
- Press Submit.
- Press the Download button and save the file to your computer.
The Grade History can be downloaded to your computer as a tab-delimited file.
